Where are Sam Sand Dunes?

Sam Sand Dunes lie about 40 km west of Jaisalmer city, towards the border with Pakistan, on the edge of the Desert National Park area. The road from Jaisalmer is in good condition and the drive takes about an hour. Along the way you pass small villages and open scrubland before the dunes begin to appear on the horizon.

The village of Sam and the nearby area of Kanoi are home to many desert camps, including Mayara Fort. Staying here means you are close to the dunes for sunset and sunrise, and you avoid the drive back to the city in the dark.

How to reach Sam Sand Dunes

  • By road: taxis and private cars run from Jaisalmer to Sam. Many camps can arrange transfers on request.
  • By train: Jaisalmer railway station connects to Jodhpur, Jaipur, Delhi and other cities. From the station, continue by road.
  • By air: Jaisalmer Airport has seasonal flights. Jodhpur Airport, about five hours away by road, is the nearest year-round airport.

Top things to do at Sam Sand Dunes

Sam is all about the desert, and the best activities make the most of the dunes and the open sky.

1. Camel safari at sunset

The classic Sam experience. A local handler leads your camel out to the higher dunes in the late afternoon, timed so you can watch the sun go down. No riding experience is needed. Read more in our camel safari guide.

2. Jeep safari and dune bashing

For more speed and distance, an open 4x4 jeep safari takes you across the dunes and to quieter spots away from the main sunset point. Ask for a calmer ride if you are travelling with children.

3. Adventure activities

Sam has a range of adventure options run by local operators, including quad biking and desert parasailing. Availability depends on the season and weather, and safety rules apply.

4. Cultural evening at a desert camp

Most camps at Sam host an evening programme of Rajasthani folk music and dance around the fire. At Mayara Fort, the cultural programme, evening snacks, dinner and a DJ party are part of every stay.

5. Dinner on the dunes

For a special evening, a private table on the sand, lit by lanterns, is hard to beat. Couples often book it for anniversaries and honeymoons. See dinner on the dunes.

6. Stargazing

Away from city lights, the night sky over Sam can be remarkably clear. On a dark night you may see the Milky Way. Our stargazing page has tips for the best nights.

Sunset at Sam: tips for the best experience

Sunset is the busiest time at the main dune area, as visitors from Jaisalmer arrive for the view. To enjoy it more, head out a little early, walk or ride to a dune slightly away from the crowd and give yourself time to settle in before the light changes. The half hour before sunset gives the warmest colour and the best photographs.

After sunset, the temperature drops quickly, especially in winter. Carry a light jacket or shawl even if the afternoon felt warm.

Should you stay overnight?

You can visit Sam as a day trip from Jaisalmer, but staying overnight is far more rewarding. Once the day visitors leave, the desert becomes quiet. You can enjoy the evening programme at your camp, look up at the stars and wake up to soft morning light on the dunes. An overnight stay also lets you do activities at a relaxed pace rather than rushing back to the city.

Choosing a desert camp at Sam

Desert camps at Sam range from simple tents to luxury stays. When choosing, think about comfort (air conditioning or heating), what is included, the facilities and how close the camp is to the dunes. If you are travelling in warmer months or with children, a swimming pool is a real advantage.

Mayara Fort offers Royal AC Swiss Tents, Royal Luxury Tents with Jacuzzi and Heritage Family AC Cottages, with a swimming pool and meals included.

Practical tips for visiting Sam Sand Dunes

  • Visit between October and March for the most comfortable weather
  • Carry sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the day
  • Bring warm layers for the evening and night
  • Protect phones and cameras from fine sand
  • Agree on activity charges in advance
  • Respect local communities and wildlife, and take your rubbish with you

A sample evening at Sam

Arrive at your camp in the early afternoon, check in and relax by the pool. Around an hour before sunset, set off on a camel or jeep safari to the dunes and find a quiet ridge for the view. Return as the light fades for evening snacks, then join the folk music and dance in the courtyard. After dinner, step away from the lights for some stargazing before the DJ starts. In the morning, enjoy breakfast and, if you are up early, a walk on the dunes in the soft light.

It is a simple rhythm, but it captures what makes Sam special: open space, warm hospitality and a sky that feels endless.

Combine Sam with Jaisalmer city

Most travellers spend one day exploring Jaisalmer Fort, the havelis and Gadisar Lake, then head to Sam for a night in the desert. On the way, you can stop at Kuldhara, the abandoned village known for its stories and stone houses. Our 2-day Jaisalmer itinerary puts it all together, and our team can help plan transfers and sightseeing.

Photography at the dunes

For the best photographs at Sam, go out in the hour before sunset or just after sunrise, when low light brings out the ripples and curves of the sand. Silhouettes of camels against the sky work best when you shoot towards the sun from the side of a dune. Keep your camera in a bag between shots, avoid changing lenses in the wind and wipe your phone lens before each photo.

A few minutes of patience, waiting for a camel train to cross the crest of a dune, often gives you the best shot of the evening.
