Mayara Fort Magic in the DesertPlan Your Stay

AFTER DARK

Stargazing
in the Thar Desert.

Far from city lights, the desert sky over Sam opens up into constellations, planets and the Milky Way.

Night in the Thar is one of the quiet highlights of a stay at Sam Sand Dunes. With little light pollution, the sky can be strikingly clear, and on a good night it is filled with more stars than most city visitors have ever seen.

Why the desert is great for stargazing

Dry air, open horizons and distance from large towns make the Thar a good place to look up. On clear, moonless nights you can trace familiar constellations, spot bright planets and follow the faint band of the Milky Way across the sky. Shooting stars are common, especially during meteor showers.

You do not need any equipment to enjoy it. Lying back on the sand and letting your eyes adjust to the dark for 15 to 20 minutes is often enough to see the sky change.

When to go

  • The cooler months from October to March usually have the clearest skies
  • Nights around the new moon are darkest
  • Late evening, after the camp programme, is often best
  • Check the weather; dust and cloud reduce visibility

Tips for a better night under the stars

  • Bring a warm layer, as desert nights get cold
  • Avoid looking at bright phone screens to keep your night vision
  • Use a red light or dim torch if you need to see
  • Download a star map app to identify constellations
  • Bring a blanket or ask for seating

A favourite with families and couples

Children love spotting shooting stars, and couples often pair stargazing with a dinner on the dunes. After a sunset camel safari and the cultural evening at camp, it is a calm way to end the day.
